The Kickoff: Friday, Aug. 23 (1)

Dean Boltz’s collegiate debut couldn’t have gone much better.

The midfielder (No. 13 in photo) recorded the first hat trick for the UW men’s soccer team in 11 years and assisted on the other goal — scored by fellow freshman Matthew Zachemski, his former Sockers FC Chicago club teammate — as the Badgers routed 10-man Marist 4-0 in a season opener Thursday night at the McClimon Complex.

The Red Foxes played down a man for 85 minutes after freshman Gijs Verheul was sent off in the 5th minute, as he took down Boltz from behind just outside the box as he burst down the left side. Boltz opened his UW account in the 20th minute on a rebound, then added goals in the 63rd and 83rd for the Badgers’ first hat trick since Jacob Brindle against Eastern Illinois on Oct. 30, 2013. In between, he set up Zachemski for the first goal of his college career in the 78th.

UW outshot Marist 21-3 and put 10 shots on goal in their highest-scoring game since a 4-2 win over Marquette on Sept. 12, 2022. Freshman goalkeeper Matisse Hébert saved the lone shot on goal he faced in the shutout in his first college match.

Thursday's highlights

Men

  • Marquette 2:0 Drexel
Senior Abdoul Karim Pare scored the 12th minute and helped set up junior Mitchell Dryden (Whitefish Bay) for a goal 15 minutes later as the Golden Eagles blanked the Dragons at Valley Fields to win their opener under new coach David Korn. Dryden was making his Marquette debut after playing his first two seasons at UW, while freshman keeper Marten Brink made six saves for the clean sheet.

  • UW-Milwaukee 0:0 Lindenwood
Senior Daniel Ibarra made five saves for his third clean sheet with the Panthers, who played a scoreless draw with the Lions in a season opener at Engelmann Stadium. Milwaukee saw Matthew Toolan's header in the 2nd minute cleared off the line by a Lindenwood defender, then watched Lions goalkeeper Enzo Gil pull off a double-save on shots by Daiki Kumakawa and Mesfin Roda in the 64th.

Did you know? Ibarra’s father is Juan de Dios Ibarra Corral, a goalkeeper who made 126 appearances in a 16-year professional career in Mexico from 2002 to 2017. He spent most of his career with CF Monterrey, and is now the goalkeeper coach for Venados FC in the second-tier Liga de Expansión MX.

  • Northwestern 2:0 UW-Green Bay
The Phoenix fell behind after 129 seconds and were outshot 18-4 as they fell to the Wildcats in Evanston, Ill., in their first game under new coach John O’Reilly, who took over the program after serving as an assistant for 10 years. Goalkeeper Alvaro Rodriguez, a transfer from Merrimack, made four saves for Green Bay.

Women

  • Connecticut 1:2 UW
Aryssa Mahrt (Wauwatosa) scored twice in a 14-minute span in the second half to lead the Badgers (1-1-0) past the Huskies (0-1-1) in Storrs, Conn. Mahrt scored on a volley from the top of the 6 after a header following a corner kick in the 59th minute, then finished off a give-and-go with fellow senior Adee Boer in the 73rd for her second career brace — the other was Oct. 23, 2022 against Nebraska.

  • Northwestern 2:0 Marquette
The Wildcats (2-1-0) outshot the Golden Eagles 18-3 and scored twice in the first half in their victory in Evanston, Ill. Sophom*ore keeper Elise Krone made seven saves for the second time in three games for Marquette (0-2-1).

  • Ohio State 4:0 UW-Milwaukee
Senior Kailyn Dudukovich had a hat trick in the opening half hour as the 18th-ranked Buckeyes (2-0-0) cruised past the Panthers (0-2-0) in Columbus, Ohio.
